Eating Healthy on the Go

Eating Healthy on the Go

Busy mothers (or busy women in general) can agree on one thing.  Finding time to eat healthy is difficult with you don’t have enough hours in the day.  During the hectic week, it can be a challenge after working a full day when you still have to take the kids to basketball practice, help them with their homework, go to bible study, and/or do laundry.  Don’t let your nutrition suffer as a result of a busy schedule.  Here are ways you can eat healthy with little to no time.

Eat a five minute breakfast.  You’ve heard it before: breakfast is the most important meal of the day but far too many busy women skip it.  Eating a healthy breakfast can assist with weight control because it can help to reduce hunger throughout the day.  Try eating dry cereal for breakfast – put whole grain cereal in a zippered bag such as Life or Cheerios and munch on it on the way to work or at your desk.  By adding some protein, you’ll feel more satisfied so supplement it with low-fat milk that you can bring in a thermal.  Whole wheat toast with peanut butter is another five minute meal.  Also, consider making hard-boiled eggs the night before and eating them with a piece of fruit.

Make your lunch the night before such as turkey on whole grain bread with mustard and 2% natural sliced cheese (skip the mayo and processed sliced cheese).  Busy women tend to eat take out for lunch or often times forgo it all together, which can make you incredibly hungry later in the afternoon.  Low-fat yogurt is also another quick food that’s easy to grab.

Keep snacks in your purse, car and/or briefcase.  When you’re on-the-go, it’s easy to buy snacks from the vending machine at work or at the concession stand at your kid’s game.  These snacks can often wreck havoc on your diet.  Buy snack-size packs of peanuts, raisins, or pretzels to keep on hand.

Plan ahead.  Eating healthy isn’t easy, particularly for busy women.  The key is to plan your meals ahead so that you can ensure you make good, healthy choices.  If you know that you won’t have time to sit and eat a meal, pack a mobile meal to take with you (mobile meals are food items you can eat on the go).
